Some products I am freecycling:
1. All my Redken products. I discovered they test on animals. I guess I am not as vigilant as I thought I was. Plus they are generally above a 5 in the Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic Safety Database.
2. Murad Exfoliating Fruit Enzyme Mask.
Rating: 6
Loaded with parabens. It also makes my face burn, which should have been a sign that I should stop using it a long time ago. I don't know that I've ever seen a huge difference from using it. Not quite sure why I still do.
3. The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Face Mask.
Rating: 5
Also makes my face burn. I've been thinking that maybe I'll stick to masks my facialist whips up for me.
4. Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo.
Rating: ?
I didn't even look this one up. I checked the ingredients and it had triclosan in it. I eliminated triclosan as much as possible from my life a little over a year ago when I was forwarded an article from another marine biologist. The article stated that triclosan causes endocrine disruption in marine animals. After reading this, I did some more investigating and found out it was pretty nasty stuff. So I dumped all my yummy smelling Bath and Body Works Soaps, my Colgate total and a host of other products. No way do I want that stuff near me. And parting with this is a wrench, because using this means I don't have to wash my hair everyday (I'm not naturally a redhead, and the more you wash red hair, the more it fades. Washing it every other day has enabled me to keep my color deep and pretty longer). But I can use Burt's Bees Baby Powder in place of it and it will work just as well and has a rating of 3.
5. Target Brand Daily Glow Natural Moisturizer.
Rating: 6
Target brand isn't in the database. But the ingredients are identical to Jergens Natural Glow which is in the database. I am really, really, really fair. Skin cancer runs in my family and I am religious about sunblock, so I was using this to give me some color, but I realized I don't really care all that much. Again, this is one of those things that other people care about more than me.
I am on the fence about Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Stress Relief Body Wash & Foam Bath, Massage Oil and Body lotion. Ironically (or not) the fragrance gives me a headache. They aren't in the database so I would have to enter them manually, which is time-consuming, and since they give me a headache anyway, I wasn't going to spend the time. However, Joe gave them to me for Christmas and I feel horribly guilty giving away presents, even if they make me miserable. I'm going to have to ponder this one.
Another problem: I wear a mouth guard at night. The mouth guard needs to be cleaned in the morning with antibacterial soap (not toothpaste or denture cleaner, but antibacterial soap). I've been using what the clerk at Whole Foods told me was antibacterial. I checked it out and it was rated a 3, but in reading the ingredients I got freaked out. I don't want to put any of those chemicals on something that goes in my mouth. I'm going to have to keep investigating but if anyone knows of a solution, I'm all ears.
Here are a few products I've found are keepers:
1. Kiss My Face Active Athletic Shower Gel and Foaming Bath
Rating: 4
Price: $10.95 for 16 oz.
I love, love, love lathering up with this after roller derby. It has arnica in it, which is good for bumps and bruises sustained at practice. Plus it relaxes me. Whether it's placebo or real, I don't care, I love it, even if it does have SLS in it (from plant sources).
2. Tom's of Maine Natural Clean & Gentle Care SLS-Free Antiplaque plus Whitening Fluoride-Free Toothpaste
Rating: 2
Price: $5.29 for 5.2 oz.
Yummy and makes my mouth feel about as clean as Colgate Total used to.
3. Jason Natural Cosmetics Swimmer's and Sports Shampoo and Conditioner
Rating: 4 (mostly for fragrance)
Price: ?
I'm a little depressed. I love this shampoo for post-derby showers, but I can't find it on the website and everywhere else I've looked it's not available or out of stock. I'm going to have to email the company and see if they've stopped making it.
4. Dermalogica Soothing Eye Make-up Remover
Rating: 3
Price: $22 for 4 oz.
Way expensive, but it's alcohol- and oil-free, and I hate having that oily feeling around my eyes. If I could find something better for cheaper, I'd switch.
5. Bigelow Chapped Hands Soap-Free Cleanser
Rating: 2
Price: $12 for 6.5 oz.
I couldn't be happier that this passed my test. I love this stuff during the winter. As a vet tech and a marine biologist my hands got sooooooooooo dry during the winter and this stuff is the only thing that would help. Go buy it now.
Tomorrow I am going to start on my makeup. Wish me luck.

This will be a short post. More of a rant, actually. And hopefully useful to
at least one person out there. Last night I discovered Hewlett Packard’s

I wear a mouthgaurd at night, too. What my dentist and Poppop told me to do to keep my mouthgaurd clean is to put it in a cup of a water/ baking soda mixture in the morning and leave it there until you are ready to put it back it at night.
that sounds brilliant!! thanks so much!!
